about

Way back in 2007 I was commissioned by the deYoung Museum in San Francisco to choose a work from their permanent collection and compose music inspired by it, so I wrote a piece called "Line and Breath," after the above painting by Marsden Hartley.

On a Sunday afternoon in October Carla Kihlstedt, Rob Sudduth, Devin Hoff, Scott Amendola, and I performed the piece, after which we went to New, Improved Recording in Emeryville and, in a chaotic and time-constrained session, somehow managed to produce quite a good take.

But I didn't have a record label back then, and Bandcamp wasn't yet. Sadly nobody ever heard the track.

So here it is, finally. I like the composition and the sound. And the band ... well you can hear for yourself.
